Background: Pilbara Iron Ore Province
The deposits sought are hematite, an economically extractable iron ore with an average grade varying between 55% and 63% iron. These resources are commonly referred to as Direct Shipping Ores (DSO) because they require very little beneficiation, apart from crushing and screening, before being shipped directly to blast furnaces for immediate use.
The two most important units of iron ore in Australia are the Brockman Iron and the Marra Mamba Iron Formations. Within these formations, a number of other different deposits are formed.
The three most important in the Pilbara are:
-
Banded Iron Formation (BIF)
-
Channel Iron Deposits (CID)
-
Detrital Iron Deposits (DID)
Project 1: Robertson Range Project
The Robertson Range Project consists of three Exploration Licence Applications - E45/3394 / E45/3395 (formerly E45/3132) and E46/818. The tenements are located in the East Pilbara Region, 119km east of Newman and cover an area of 798.6 km2.
Considerable exploration activity by major and junior companies is continuing in various areas surrounding Legacy’s project including FerrAus and Hannans Reward. Legacy has identified fourteen iron ore targets from satellite imagery and reconnaissance rock samples have returned assays to 55.2% Fe. The Jimjim series of anomalies form topographic highs and are outcropping at surface. The exploration potential of this tenure to host iron ore and manganese resources is supported by:
-
Significant resources defined by FerrAus (150.1 Mt at 58.7% Fe) at Davidson Creek and Robertson Range and encouraging intersections drilled by Hannans Reward (18m at 59.2% Fe) at Mijimji. These projects are located to the west and south-west of Legacy's tenement package.
-
Outcropping mineralisation with rockchip samples to 55.2% Fe on the tenements.
-
Fourteen iron targets identified from satellite imagery.

Project 2: Hamersley Project
The Hamersley Project is centrally-located in the Hamersley Iron province and consists of an unencumbered interest in two exploration leases, E47/1868 and E47/1869, covering an area of 52.3 km2. The tenements are located 50km west of Tom Price.
The project is considered highly prospective for discovering iron ore resources in either CID or DID-style, due to the major Beasley CID deposits located adjacent to the tenements. Satellite imagery has identified ten iron ore targets, both outcropping and under shallow soil and colluvial cover. The Company is planning reconnaissance geological mapping and sampling of these anomalies in 2009.
